Letter from the Mayor of Hamamatsu to participants exhibiting in the Hamamatsu International Mosaiculture 2009

September 2007

I hope that this letter finds you well. I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks for your continued interest in Hamamatsu City.

Hamamatsu, which became an ordinance-designated city in April 2007, is earnestly preparing for Hamamatsu International Mosaiculture 2009, which will take place in autumn 2009, involving participants from over eighty organisations and more than thirty countries.

Mosaiculture has its roots in three-dimensional horticultural art using living flowers and foliage, and was developed in France in the nineteenth century. These ‘floral sculptures’ became popular throughout Europe.

Transcending time, mosaiculture was recreated at the end of the twentieth century in Montreal, Canada, and is now spreading rapidly throughout the world. This event, which has been held three times previously, is attracting great interest from all quarters and continuing to gain in popularity.

As well as continuing the success of the three previous mosaiculture events, we will draw on experience gained in hosting Pacific Flora in 2004 to organise a successful event aimed at further developing mosaiculture.

At Hamamatsu International Mosaiculture 2009, we will give an outline of all the countries, cities, businesses and other organisations staging an exhibit, and introduce their various cultures and horticultural arts to both Japan and  the world. We are currently accepting applications to participate in this international flower and greenery festival, which facilitates and furthers exchange between participants from around the world.

I hope that you will appreciate our aims in hosting this event, and give careful thought to participating in Hamamatsu International Mosaiculture 2009.

Welcome to Japan's first Mosaiculture Exposition

Dear friends,

In the autumn of  2009, the Gardens and Parks Services of cities from around the planet will meet in Hamamatsu, Japan to present their cultural and horticultural expertise at « Hamamatsu International Mosaiculture 2009 » (MIH2009).

In presenting the 3rd edition of this great international competition, Hamamatsu will be shown as a one of the world’s leaders in developing new horticultural approaches and join Montreal and Shanghai who welcomed millions of visitors during the previous presentations of « Mosaicultures International ».

City of culture and horticulture by excellence, Hamamatsu has revealed itself to all the members of the International Mosaiculture Committee as the ideal candidate to hold this international event based on the integration of landscape architecture, culture and the art of gardens.

The theme « The Symphony of People and Nature » proposed by Hamamatsu could not have been better chosen especially in these times when man is confronted with new environmental challenges. In uniting the universal language of flowers and music, Hamamatsu will give the participating cities the opportunity to illustrate how different societies on the planet compose with nature.

Since Hamamatsu so magnificently presented Pacific Flora 2004, we are assured that they will elevate« Mosaicultures International » to a level of refinement never before seen and for everyone’s greatest enjoyment.

On behalf of all the members of the International Mosaiculture Committee, I invite you to this fabulous international event which I am sure will leave you filled with amazement!
